A 1D scanner reads the stripes printed on a product. A 2D scanner like this one also reads QR codes, and crucially it reads them off a glass screen, which matters the moment a customer shows you a code on their phone.
It sits in a stand for hands-free scanning or comes out for a bulky item. Plug it into USB and it types the barcode as if somebody had typed it: no software to install.
